When the Lagos International Trade Fair approached us with the goal of attracting 1 million visitors and securing 350,000 registrations over 10 days, we knew the marketing strategy had to be different.
Historically, the Trade Fair is perceived by the general public as a massive market. A place to go for shopping and everyday bargains. While this is an element of the event, the organizers needed to attract a different caliber of attendee: career professionals, business owners, entrepreneurs, and serious networkers.
The core challenge was clear: How do we reposition the largest trade fair in West Africa to highlight its value beyond consumerism, all while managing a campaign budget of ₦15 to 20 million?
In a high stakes strategy session with the LITF team, we identified the core problem as a narrative issue. The conversation wasn't just about selling products. It was about selling opportunity.
We developed a central content pillar for the 2025 edition: "More Than Shopping."
This wasn't just a tagline. It was the strategic directive for every piece of content we created. The audience needed to understand that the Trade Fair is a gateway to opportunities. From connecting with industry leaders and discovering new business partnerships to exploring career paths and networking with like minded professionals.
With the theme locked in and the clock ticking, we deployed a rapid execution framework focused on visibility, simplicity, and engagement.
One of the first roadblocks we identified was the registration process. The portal required users to create a detailed profile, which, while great for data management, was a barrier to entry for the casual attendee. Our Action: We immediately simplified the call to action by creating a memorable Bitly link that was implemented across all communications. This reduced friction and allowed us to track click through rates from various platforms accurately.
We moved away from generic influencer shout outs. Instead of influencers just saying "come and buy," we instructed them to use personalized content designed to engage their followers. We provided influencers with simple, question based prompts. "Are you an entrepreneur looking for manufacturers?" "Are you a professional hoping to expand your network?" This positioned the fair as a hub for growth, not just consumption.
To support the "More Than Shopping" narrative, we needed proof. We facilitated on ground engagement with businesses and attendees to capture real stories. We highlighted exhibitors who had connected with new clients at previous fairs and professionals who found valuable partnerships. This content served as social proof for potential attendees sitting on the fence, showing them that the value of attending went far beyond the price of admission.
In the week leading up to the event, we focused on saturating the digital space. We ensured online visibility by monitoring social listening tools to track hashtag performance. We aimed to build on the success of previous campaigns, but with a focus on structured engagement, not just views.
By implementing the "More Than Shopping" pillar, we achieved a significant shift in the online conversation surrounding LITF 2025.
The marketing message became consistent across all platforms. Whether a user saw a tweet, an Instagram post, or an ad, they understood that the Trade Fair was a destination for networking and growth, not just holiday shopping.
By focusing on career professionals and business owners, we attracted the high value attendees the organizers were targeting.
The simplified URL strategy ensured that the journey from "interested" to "registered" was as short as possible, helping us track toward the 350,000 registration goal.
By shifting the focus from what you can buy to who you can meet and what you can learn, we helped the Lagos International Trade Fair build a foundation for a future where it is recognized not just as a market, but as a premier destination for opportunity in Lagos.
